Fresh Water Kayak Fishing Trip - Andrew Fletcher
1:13PM 5th Jul 14

Andrew July 3, 2014, Fishing Addicts Anonymous

Annual trip to the Central North Island for a family get together. With 2 adults and 2 kids the car was full but with the destination being lake side I still managed to fit in the essential fishing gear. Packing as light as I could I managed to fit in the Viking Profish Reload, paddle, tackle pod with Lowrance HDI 7 fish finder, landing net and 3 of might lightest rod setups.

With limited time available to get out on the lake I headed out early on day 1 and stayed close to the shore casting and retrieving around the weed beds. First fish was a Brown Trout caught on a 6lb spin setup using a black and gold toby lure.

When moving from spots I towed a lure out the back and picked up a few small Rainbow Trout on the same black and gold toby lure. Also lost a few of the Rainbows as they are quite acrobatic and jump out of the water and can shake the hook free.

I found a bit of a gully that would have been no more than 30m wide but still over 15m deep. Again casting the toby lure around the weed beds I picked up a Rainbow Trout on the cast and slow retrieve.

To mix things up a bit at the next spot I tried a small Shimano Waxwing lure on a new 2lb spin setup with 4lb fluro leader. This made things interesting fighting a jumping Rainbow but I was able to successfully get the trout to the kayak and in the net.

The following day again I headed out early. Starting off with the 2lb setup and a Tokoroa Chicken lure I quickly hooked up but unfortunately this time was busted off.

Quickly swapping over to the 6lb setup and the good old toby lure I hooked up on the fish for the weekend which was Brown Trout weighing in at 3lb12.

Check out the video for some of the footage from the trip and some stunning New Zealand scenery.
